In the Community

Brown-Forman gives its name, time, and financial resources to a number of philanthropic endeavors. We believe these efforts are a natural extension of our Diversity & Inclusion strategy and serve to further strengthen our ties to our community. We are actively involved with numerous events and awards programs that recognize individual and group achievements that take place within the scope of our diversity and inclusion values.

Black Achievers

YMCA Black Achievers

The YMCA Black Achievers program was founded in 1971 at New York City’s Harlem Y with the purpose of helping to advance African American students in their educational and career pursuits. The partnership between Brown-Forman and Louisville’s Chestnut Street YMCA began in 1981 when Owsley Frazier established the Brown-Forman Black Achievers Scholarship and summer employment opportunities for program participants. The Brown-Forman scholarship is one of the largest independent scholarships awarded through the Black Achievers program. It allows students the financial freedom to study out of state or at private universities, removing many of the barriers that may otherwise have limited their choice of colleges. The scholarship awards scholars with $10,000 per year for four years of undergraduate study at the institution of the Scholar’s choice and a paid summer internship with Brown-Forman. Since awarding its first scholarship, Brown-Forman has contributed approximately $700,000 to the Black Achievers program in scholarship money and corporate sponsorship.
