Fetzer Vineyards Recognized A Second Time As Leader In Energy Efficiency
Fetzer Vineyards earned a 2008 Flex Your Power Award for its overall efforts in energy efficiency, conservation, embrace of renewable energy technologies and ongoing energy-related education for both the winery’s staff and the wine industry.
Fetzer also earned the same award in 2005 along with the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory for developing an easy-to-use, computer-based evaluation tool which allows wineries to identify ways to reduce energy and water costs.
The annual Flex Your Power awards, given by the California Public Utilities Commission, originated in 2001 to acknowledge outstanding leadership in energy efficiency.
Of the award winners for 2008, Director Walter McGuire of Flex Your Power explained, “The awards present an opportunity for California to congratulate the leadership shown by this year’s Flex Your Power award winners, who have demonstrated that we can all save money and the environment. By reducing their energy use, this year’s Flex Your Power award winners have saved more than $227 million, 1.5 billion kilowatt hours, 122 billion gallons of water, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 1.3 billion pounds.” Since Fetzer won its first award, cumulatively, award winners over the last three years have saved more than $500 million, three billion kilowatt hours and reduced greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to removing more than 230,000 cars from the road.
Fetzer Vineyards has long been a pioneer is sustainable business practices. Among its accomplishments reflected in the newest Flex Your Power award,
- Fetzer has begun “light-weighting” the 23 million bottles of Fetzer Valley Oaks wine produced on average each year, saving energy throughout the production process and supply chain equivalent to 4,434,470 kilowatt hours, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 14% (or 2985 tons of carbon equivalents) annually;
- The winery has replaced metal halide light fixtures will high efficiency linear fluorescent lights which reduce usage by 255,532 kilowatt hours annually;
- Continued to insulate fermentation tanks, saving 53,942 KWh annually; and
- Remains a leader in renewable energy through its solar installations, including an 899-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system that remains one of the largest in the industry.
